2418 goes to Rheindahlen

On Tuesday the 5th of July cadets Downey, Smith, Watt and Warrant Officer Bates set off on their 12 hour journey to JHQ Rheindahlen in Germany. We arrived at Rheindahlen around lunch time on Wednesday, we were welcomed by the camp commandant who gave us the main brief, and then we were given our rooms and put into flights. We then had lunch and finished the day with a swim in the camps outdoor pool.

We started the week properly with a brief from the Royal Military Police, Fire Service and the ACLO. Later that day we completed a FAMEX around the base and shot the L98 A2 on the DCCT range.

During the week we visited the town of Köln, while there we visited a very big cathedral and got the afternoon to do some shopping. In the evening we visited a go-karting track in Holland which was very enjoyable.

We visited a place in Holland called ‘Break Out’ which is an outdoor adventure centre, while there we did: High Ropes Course, Rock Climbing, Archery, Tunnelling and the Low Ropes Course!

Later in the week we visited Arnhem. Arnhem was the town in which the airborne assault on the German army during World War 2 happened, we visited the bridge and visited a museum about the Parachute regiment of the British Army. After that we visited the Arnhem war cemetery where the British troops are buried from the conflict in Arnhem.

The next day we visited the war museum in Overloon which is the biggest of its kind in Europe! They had a huge collection of military artefacts and a huge military vehicles. Later that day we visited a German war cemetery in which over 31,000 people are buried.

Before we knew it the week was over and we were at the BBQ/Disco in the Corporals club. Later that evening we had the infamous Paper Plate Awards!
The next day we were on our way home, returning to the SQN at about 1 o’clock in the morning!
