2418 Cadet Secures Ralph Reid-Buckle Bursary

Sgt HolmesIn late 2014, a cadet from 2418 (Sherwood) Squadron applied for a place on the Ralph Reid-Buckle Flying Bursary for 2015. The Ralph Reid-Buckle bursary is a course which trains young cadets to fly solo in a glider and it is held at the Buckminster Gliding Club. In the application, Sergeant Sam Holmes had to fill in many things such as the activities he's done in the ATC and why he would like to be on the course. In early 2015, he received a letter stating he had made it through to the interview stage of the Bursary. The interview took place on the 26th of April 2015 at a neighbouring squadron.

The interviewers were all well respected high-ranking officers that all had lots of gliding experience. In the interview, SGT Holmes was asked many questions on how gliders worked, how they generated lift and he was also quizzed on many different gliding terms and acronyms. He described the interview as "Very nerve-racking but also a great experience to have gone through." After completing the interview he would find out if he had secured his place the next day.

SGT Holmes was extremely pleased when he received a phone call from his CO telling him he had secured one of the four places on the course. SGT Holmes said

"This is going to be one of the highlights of my cadet career. I cannot wait for the course in July and I'm looking forward to meet the fellow cadets on my course. I'd urge anybody to apply for this place as it is something amazing to be doing."
