Sergeant Maule collects Gold at the Palace.

On the 30th November 2011 I was invited to St James’ Palace in London to collect my Duke of Edinburgh Gold Award from HRH The Duke of Edinburgh.

The event began at 10:30 as a total of 400 award recipients and their guests gathered outside St James’ Palace to collect their certificates. Each presentation group was in a banquet room in four groups of around 20 people from the midlands region. The dignitary for my group was Philip Brown, a 1984 Los Angeles Summer Olympic Athlete, who presented our certificates and gave a talk about the importance of attaining a Gold Award and the benefits that had been gained by each and every award holder and how attaining the Gold Award was not the end of the Duke of Edinburgh journey.

Then HRH Prince Philip entered the banquet room and asked questions to each group, he asked my group if anyone had done their expedition abroad so I answered and said I completed my final expedition in Bavaria, Germany with the Cadet forces. This was an amazing opportunity to have the attention of The Duke of Edinburgh and engage with him.

The overall experience was fantastic and a once in a lifetime opportunity. It was a very proud moment for me and one which I will always remember. I strongly recommend and encourage people to take part in the Duke of Edinburgh Award scheme as it has given me so many opportunities and experiences that I will keep with me for life.
